This includes reducing hazards to health and safety, improving water quality, eliminating soil erosion, and returning land affected by past mining practices to productive use, thereby improving the economy of the region.
The Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR) | Reclaiming Our Environment & Empowering Volunteers in Ashley
The Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR), located in Ashley, PA, is a nonprofit organization. EPCAMR works to reclaim lands affected by past coal mining activities and improve regional water quality. They serve 16 counties across eastern Pennsylvania through environmental education, volunteer-led initiatives, and reclamation projects.
Founded in the mid-1990s, EPCAMR leads efforts to reclaim abandoned mine lands. They manage large-scale, grant-funded reclamation projects. EPCAMR addresses abandoned mine drainage (AMD) by using passive treatment systems that improve water quality. Their work includes conducting watershed assessments and creating reports for local communities. Over 45 volunteer-led watershed groups have been supported by EPCAMR. The organization advocates for the region’s mining history and environmental recovery.
How EPCAMR Makes a Difference
EPCAMR organizes volunteer events such as tree plantings and illegal dumpsite cleanups to protect local ecosystems. One project reclaims iron oxide from AMD and transforms it into art materials, such as pottery and jewelry. They also educate the public about pollution risks and advocates for watershed protection.
Volunteer Opportunities for Every Interest
EPCAMR offers a wide variety of volunteer roles, including fieldwork, research, marketing, and even art projects. Volunteers can assist with environmental education, hands-on projects, and community outreach. Artists can contribute by creating art from reclaimed pigments.
A Stronger Community for All
Supporting EPCAMR helps improve the health and safety of coal-impacted communities. Their efforts positively impact watersheds, the Delaware Estuary, and Chesapeake Bay. EPCAMR fosters a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
Supporting The Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation is a chance to be part of a movement that uplifts both communities and ecosystems.
