A Look Back at a Milestone Gathering in the Birthplace of American Democracy

Great moments in history deserve more than a passing glance—they invite us to pause, reflect, and carry their lessons forward.
That’s exactly what happened last fall when America250PA hosted its National Convening of States and Partners in Philadelphia, bringing together leaders, historians, and visionaries to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the First Continental Congress at Carpenters’ Hall.
The weekend of events was a powerful reminder of why Pennsylvania stands at the heart of America’s story. With the 250th anniversary of our nation fast approaching in 2026, the gathering set the stage for meaningful discussions, exciting partnerships, and a renewed commitment to honoring our past while shaping the future.

The convening brought together over 30 state commissions, 250+ in-state partners, and a distinguished roster of speakers, including former Pennsylvania governors, national leaders, and historians. Hosted at amazing venues like the National Constitution Center and Carpenters’ Hall, the event featured insightful panels, engaging performances, and a celebration of the E.P.I.C. (Educate, Preserve, Innovate, Celebrate) framework guiding America250PA’s work.
From A Walk Through Pennsylvania History with Former Governors to discussions on the role of host cities in the Semiquincentennial, the weekend showed that the spirit of 1776 is alive and well as we approach America’s 250th birthday.

Honoring the Past, Building the Future
The convening was a celebration of community, culture, and collaboration. Attendees enjoyed performances from Philadelphia’s Fife and Drum Corps, the House of Maci Lago, and Irish violinist Patricia Treacy. Yolanda Wisher, former Philadelphia Poet Laureate, composer and pianist Chloe Flower, and Emmy-winning hip-hop artist Frzy showcased the creative bridge between spoken word, classical music, and hip-hop. Conversations on diverse stories and unique communities ensured that as we prepare for 2026, we are telling a complete and inclusive story of America’s journey.

Pennsylvania Leads the Way
As America250PA Executive Director Cassandra Coleman noted, this gathering was just a glimpse of what’s to come:
“We look to preserve our history, strengthen our unity, and pave the way for a brighter future. And what better place to do that than Philadelphia, the birthplace of American democracy?”
