Plastic Strapping: The Key To Safe Deliveries
Every day, deliveries show up on doorsteps across the country safe and ready to use—all thanks to the unsung hero of shipping: plastic strapping. You likely don’t give it a second thought when you unbox your new TV, unpack that ergonomic office chair, or set up your new treadmill, but those durable straps that are swiftly discarded are essential in keeping your delivery safe.
From the warehouse floor to your front door
From hefty appliances like refrigerators and washing machines to cases of water or lumber for your weekend project, plastic strapping ensures everything stays secure during its journey from warehouse to doorstep. A detail you probably don’t notice, but one you definitely benefit from.
Behind the scenes, companies like EAM-Mosca make it all possible. By providing customer-focused solutions for end-of-line packaging systems, the Hazleton-based manufacturer makes certain that businesses across industries can efficiently and securely ship their products. Their expertise in strapping technology means every package is handled with care, so it arrives at the customers home just as it should.
“We make sure that the value that they created is safely and securely packaged, so it can be shipped out.”
An Industry Leader in Strapping Solutions
EAM-Mosca, a family-owned business with a strong focus on customer-driven solutions, has spent the past 40 years developing high-tech strapping systems and customized equipment to help businesses streamline their operations.
Founded in 1982 in Long Island, New York, as EAM (European-American Marketing), the company initially focused on providing a foothold for German-based manufacturing in the U.S. However, Long Island’s cost challenges and logistical limitations prompted EAM to seek a location better suited for growth, manufacturing and logistics. Hazleton’s affordable real estate, proximity to major shipping routes and skilled local workforce made it the ideal choice.
Hazleton and Global Expansion
The move was facilitated through the efforts of Hazleton’s economic development group CAN DO, formerly led by the late Kevin O’Donnell, its president, who played a key role in welcoming EAM to the area. In 1988, the company settled into the Valmont Industrial Park, marking a pivotal turning point in its history.
By 1990, EAM merged with Mosca AG, the German manufacturer with whom they had partnered from the start. This merger officially formed EAM-Mosca, allowing the company to shift from distribution to manufacturing, customization and global distribution of end-of-line packaging solutions.
The relocation to Hazleton proved transformative. It enabled EAM-Mosca to introduce localized production of polyester and polypropylene strapping, solidifying Hazleton as the headquarters for all North and South American operations—a position the company continues to build upon today.
Remarkable Growth and Commitment to People
A Hub of Innovation
EAM-Mosca designs, manufactures and supplies state-of-the-art strapping machines and systems, including high-performance bundlers, unitizers and specialty products that optimize the end-of-line packaging process.
Their proprietary SoniXs ultrasonic sealing technology redefined the industry by using ultrasonic waves to bond recyclable straps. This approach not only enhances reliability but also reduces material waste and downtime. “We’ve revolutionized the market with our ultrasonic sealing technology,” says Jan Wessel, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer. “So instead of having either a heat or friction seal – that costs energy and is less efficient – we use ultrasonic vibrations actually to seal the recyclable material.”
Customization is a key part of how EAM-Mosca does business. Recognizing that North American needs often differ from those in Europe and Asia, the company tailors machine designs to meet specific customer requirements. Whether modifying machine colors, integrating automation or incorporating digital monitoring, their engineering team delivers solutions that ensure seamless integration into existing production lines.
There are three things that hold the world together. First there’s duct tape, then there’s zip ties and after that there’s strapping. Strapping is actually the key to that more sustainable future that we want.
Exceptional Progress
“What we do every day only works because of the people that work here.” – Christian Wiethuechter, President & CEO
EAM-Mosca’s growth trajectory is nothing short of remarkable, emphasizes Christian Wiethuechter, President & CEO. “In 1990, when EAM-Mosca formed, we were at around $8 million in sales. Right now, we are at $180 million. Just in the last four years, we’ve grown over 70%. That’s really remarkable and reflects the contribution of the employees in this area.”
EAM-Mosca is focused on continuing to expand both its product portfolio and geographic reach, ensuring that it stays at the forefront of the strapping industry. At the same time, the company is committed to raising its local profile to attract the next generation of talent, positioning itself as an employer of choice in Hazleton and beyond.
Employee-Driven Success
But what truly sets EAM-Mosca apart is not just its cutting-edge technology—it’s the people behind the company, agrees both Jan and Christian. With nearly 180 employees based in Hazleton and over 350 across the Americas, including Canada, Mexico and Brazil, EAM-Mosca has fostered a culture of growth, support and opportunity. “You can grow your whole path here,” emphasizes Jan. “That’s what I think a lot of the tenured employees can also see for themselves. I would say really the upward mobility you have by being a corporate headquarters for the Americas is impactful.”
Career opportunities span a variety of fields from engineering and technical services to administrative roles. The company has a strong track record of employee retention, with many individuals having been with the company for over a decade. Reflecting on this success, Jan says, “People can see what their days work is—you can leave your fingerprints here. I do think day by day people can see their impacts.”
Shaping the Future of Packaging and Northeastern Pennsylvania
EAM-Mosca’s success is built on a simple but powerful idea: focus on the customer. By blending cutting-edge technology with a deep understanding of their clients’ needs, they’ve become a trusted partner for businesses across the Americas.
And while their reach is global, Hazleton remains at the center of it all. With every new project and innovation, EAM-Mosca is not just advancing the industry—they’re helping to shape the future of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
