Greater Hazleton Area students inspire change and empower next generation

In Hazleton, a new generation of leaders isn’t waiting for change – they’re making it happen. The CAN DO Student Action Committee (SAC) is a powerhouse of high school juniors and seniors who are turning ideas into action, strengthening community ties, and gaining hands-on experience that will shape their futures.

Founded by CAN DO Inc., a private, non-profit industrial/economic development corporation serving the Greater Hazleton Area, SAC has been a driving force behind several community initiatives since 1971. Each month, these students brainstorm, plan, and execute projects that directly benefit the community, fostering collaboration between local businesses, organizations, and residents. In the process, they’re not only giving back but also developing real-world skills in leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Over the past three months, CAN DO’s SAC led impactful projects that demonstrate their ability to drive meaningful change.

Supporting the Troops

SAC’s commitment to service was on full display during Operation: CAN DO, a collaboration with the Freeland American Legion Post 473. Students led a community-wide effort to collect, assemble, and send care packages to over 70 local soldiers deployed away from home during the holidays. The initiative mobilized schools, businesses, and residents to show appreciation for those in uniform, demonstrating the students’ ability to rally support, communicate their mission, and make a real difference.

Spreading Holiday Cheer

Each December, SAC students step up to help organize two of Hazleton’s most beloved holiday traditions – CAN DO Community Christmas and Tree Lighting Ceremony and Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress (DHAP)’s Wassailfest. DHAP, an affiliate organization within the CAN DO umbrella, is a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing downtown Hazleton through partnerships. From welcoming guests and managing activities to serving up hot chocolate, SAC students play an essential role in creating a festive atmosphere for the community. Their leadership and enthusiasm bring people together, reinforcing the importance of tradition, teamwork, and civic pride.

A Jump-Start on Future Success

Beyond their service projects, SAC members gain valuable real-world experiences that bolster their paths forward. Through facility tours, leadership seminars, and career-building opportunities, they are learning the importance of leadership, collaboration, and service. This gives them a competitive edge as they prepare to enter the workforce and make an impact on their community and beyond.

SAC students visit local organizations like the CAN BE Innovation Center and Hazleton LaunchBox, where they learn about entrepreneurship and the resources available in the area to help new businesses thrive. They also attend seminars featuring professionals from CAN DO’s manufacturing sector, gaining insights from HR, marketing, and design experts about the diverse career opportunities within manufacturing. These experiences provide students with a broader perspective on potential career paths and the resources available to help them succeed.

The Next Generation of Leaders

SAC students are not just talking about change – they’re making it happen. By actively contributing to the community, these students are building a foundation of leadership, service and collaboration that will benefit them from years to come.

Their impact is already being felt throughout Greater Hazleton, and their journey is just beginning. With their passion, drive, and commitment to making a difference, they’re proving that the future of the region is in great hands.
