Summer Floral Displays in the Business District
“Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful. They are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.”
We think of this quote by famous American botanist and horticulturist Luther Burbank (1849-1926), as we work with business owners in Downtown Scranton to prepare for an upcoming competition as part of the Electric City Flower Show. On First Friday in June, Scranton Tomorrow will host the 3rd annual Downtown Scranton Business Class Category in partnership with the Electric City Flower Show.
The project is a wonderful precursor to the Electric City Flower Show coming up on Saturday, June 21, at Nay Aug Park in Scranton. Here’s how it works:
- On Friday, June 6, participating businesses will display original floral container designs in front of their establishments in Downtown Scranton. Click here for a list of businesses featuring displays.
- Visitors to the Downtown are encouraged to take self-guided tours of the displays during First Friday in June and note their favorites.
- Signs with QR codes will be posted at each display. Scan the code with a smartphone to link to Scranton Tomorrow’s Facebook page where all the arrangements will be posted at midnight on June 6. “Like” your favorites to cast your votes! Online voting will remain open for 24 hours.
- In partnership with the Everhart Museum, Scranton Tomorrow will honor First, Second and Third Place winners on Friday, June 20, at the Flower Power Happy Hour at the Everhart Museum from 5 to 8 p.m.
- Winning arrangements will be on display at the Electric City Flower Show at Nay Aug Park on Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The competition launched in 2023 as part of Scranton City Pride, a project of Scranton Tomorrow, NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania, and United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA (UNC). Now in its third year, the Downtown floral competition has truly blossomed! “We are so pleased with the response from our business community,” said Liz Baldi, Business Development Director, Scranton Tomorrow. “We started this competition as a way to further engage businesses during Scranton City Pride clean-ups and beautification programs, and it has continued to grow. Every year, the displays become more elaborate and innovative. We can’t wait to see what they come up with this year!”
