Art in Context Lecture: When Home is No Longer Yours takes place at Sordoni Art Gallery in Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 12:00 PM. Presented by Dr. Andreea Maierean, the lecture shares its title with her essay published in the related exhibition catalog and expands on the themes explored in that writing.
Dr. Maierean examines what it means to be forcibly displaced, drawing from her grandmother’s experience as a World War II refugee in Romania and connecting it to broader questions of refuge and belonging. The talk considers how displacement can involve not only the loss of home, but also ongoing fear, trauma, and a lasting shift in identity and security.
Dr. Maierean joined the department in 2014 after earning a PhD in Political Science from Boston University and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Political Science. Her academic background includes study in Bucharest, Trieste, Budapest, and Vienna, and her research interests include post-communist transitions to democracy, transitional justice, and environmental policy.
