AFA Gallery is excited to announce the opening of the CAPACITY exhibition on October 19, 2024, at 6 PM. Led by Lisa Murphy, a Ph.D. Candidate from Point Park University, this unique art show invites the Northeast Pennsylvania (NEPA) community to engage in a dynamic conversation about local murals and the themes that resonate most with residents.

CAPACITY, which stands for Creating Art via Photovoice Analysis of Community Identity Themes & imagerY, is both an art exhibition and a community-engaged research project that seeks to explore two essential questions: (1) What content or themes found in local murals truly resonate with NEPA residents? And (2) What additional themes could reflect their community identity in future murals? While previous murals in the region have primarily showcased the visions of artists and project administrators, CAPACITY invites NEPA residents to share their perspectives, ensuring that the community’s voice is authentically represented in the evolving public art landscape.

The exhibition will feature a compelling collection of photographs taken by NEPA residents that reflect the community’s insights and have been analyzed as data for academic research. Visitors will have the opportunity to view visual data that highlights the themes that matter most to residents, fostering a deeper understanding of how public art can evolve to better serve and represent the community.
