Like most good detective stories, 1944’s “Double Indemnity” has its roots in the pulpy noir literature that defined the decade. The film is based on a 1936 serialized story by the same name, while its screenplay is co-authored by genre powerhouse Raymond Chandler. Add successful screen actor Barbara Stanwyck as femme fatale Phyllis Dietrichson and all the ingredients are in place for a hard-boiled classic.
