Family Nature Walk: Bare Tree ID | George and Lillian Picton Wildlife Sanctuary, Foster Township

Saturday, January 10, 2026 | 10:00 AM

Family Nature Walk: Bare Tree ID takes place at the George and Lillian Picton Wildlife Sanctuary in Foster Township on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 10:00 AM. This moderately paced guided walk invites families to explore the sanctuary while learning how to identify trees during the winter season.

The walk follows the Split Rock Trail, a paved route that gradually inclines on the way up to Split Rock and gently declines as it loops back toward the parking area. The trail provides a comfortable route suitable for families and participants of various ages.

Led by naturalist Emma Thompson, the hike includes frequent stops throughout the Picton Preserve to highlight key characteristics used to identify trees without leaves. Participants will learn how bark texture, branching structure, and overall form help distinguish one species from another.

Each attendee will receive a Common Tree ID book to support hands-on learning and interactive guessing throughout the walk, making this an educational and engaging outdoor experience.
