Fireside Chat: The Intrepid Irish of Susquehanna County takes place at the Susquehanna County Historical Society in Montrose on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at 10:30 AM, featuring a presentation by Historical Society staff member Connie Snedeker on early Irish settlement in the county and the forces that shaped their success.
The talk explores the arrival of Irish settlers and the pivotal role of Dr. Robert Rose, a major landholder who aimed to develop and improve thousands of acres. In a landscape that was once remote wilderness—marked by dense forest and daunting conditions—many families attempted to settle and ultimately moved on. This program highlights how Irish settlers persisted, built community, and learned to successfully farm the region’s challenging, rocky terrain.
Visitors can also take advantage of additional opportunities at the Historical Society during the day. The museum will be open for free tours from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Research time is available from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and is free for members; non-members may access research services for $10.
Accessible entry is available for visitors with mobility needs.
