The exhibition Migrations: Helen Zughaib at the Sordoni Art Gallery in Wilkes-Barre opens Tuesday, October 28, 2025, and runs through Thursday, February 27, 2026. This striking body of work invites viewers to explore the powerful connections between historical and contemporary migration through Zughaib’s vivid, narrative paintings.
Inspired by Jacob Lawrence’s landmark 1941 Migration Series, Zughaib’s Syrian Migration Series reimagines these themes for a modern era. The artist examines the aftermath of the post–World War I peace and the geopolitical divisions created by the Treaty of Versailles—divisions that continue to shape the Middle East and global migration patterns today.
Through her art, Zughaib gives voice to the displaced, highlighting the experiences of women and children whose lives have been upended by conflict. The exhibition combines bold color and poignant storytelling to illuminate the enduring human cost of war and the universal desire for home, safety, and belonging.
