The program will continue on Saturday, August 24th at 9:30 am with Sacred Sites when the Society’s Places of Worship tour visits Carbondale churches. By highlighting churches that represent different denominations, the tour will reflect the diversity of religious groups both historically and architecturally. A representative from each organization will present the history of the faith community, and Scranton architect Martina Bacarella will discuss each building’s architectural details and explain how the tour sites represent various aspects of standard religious architecture. Sacred Sites slated for the tour are Berean Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale, First United Methodist Church of Carbondale, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, and Trinity Episcopal Church. Bacarella recently oversaw the restoration work at St. Rose of Lima Church so she brings some first-hand knowledge to the program. This day-long walking tour, scheduled to conclude at 3:30 pm, also includes a lunch in the city’s Memorial Park, catered by the Anthracite Center.
Tickets are $25 for the Tour and $35 for the Sacred Sounds performance. Registration is required for both events and a combo ticket is available for $45. Tickets are available online at https://lackawanna-historical-society.ticketleap.com/. For more information, call (570) 344-341 or contact the Society by email at lackawannahistory@gmail.com.
