Take your pottery skills to the next level with the Surface Design Pottery Class at The Peaceful Potter in Wilkes-Barre. This six-week course, beginning Tuesday, October 28, 2025, focuses exclusively on surface decoration and creative finishing techniques for ceramic artists.
Students will explore a wide range of design methods, including carving, sgraffito, slip trailing, Mishima, and glaze layering. Additional techniques include adding sculptural elements, using slip as texture, applying underglaze transfers, and mastering ombré effects. Each session is designed to expand your artistic vocabulary and help you create pottery that’s rich in detail and personal expression.
This class is intended for students who have completed the Intro to Pottery course (or equivalent). Wheel-throwing and hand-building instruction are not included. Tuition is $287 per person and covers all clay, glazes, and firing for up to 10 pieces.
Students attend once per week for six two-hour sessions with unlimited studio time during weeks 1–4 and three additional open studio days (Friday–Sunday) after the final class to complete glazing.
Participants will need a basic pottery tool kit, a one-gallon bucket, a car wash sponge, and a towel. Tool kits are available for purchase at the studio on the first day for $30.
