A Spring Tradition Returns to April with Wyoming Valley Striders
The 50th Annual Cherry Blossom 5 Mile Run is happening on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre! This race has been a beloved tradition since its inception in 1975, and the Wyoming Valley Striders are excited to bring it back to its original spot at the end of April, after being held in early May for over two decades. This year’s race promises to be extra special as we celebrate 50 years of running in NEPA. Along with the race being a month earlier, the start time is also an hour earlier at 9 a.m., giving runners more time to enjoy their day!
Cherry Blossom Festival
After the race, stick around and enjoy the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which will feature local vendors, entertainment, and fun for the whole family. It’s the perfect way to make a day of it and experience the vibrant atmosphere of the festival while celebrating your race accomplishment.

What Our Race Director Has to Say
Race director since 2014 and WVS treasurer, Traci Strungis, shared her excitement:
“We can’t wait to welcome runners to the Cherry Blossom Run! It’s such a nice race because you’re up on the levee, and you don’t have to contend with any major hills. It’s actually a downhill finish! As a 5-mile race, it’s longer than a 5K, and there aren’t as many 5-mile races in the area, making it stand out. Also, we are celebrating the Wyoming Valley Striders’ 50th Anniversary this year, which makes it extra special!”

Celebrating Our Past
From race starts behind the courthouse to running through the grass of the park, to crossing the Market Street Bridge and cruising down the levee, the course has changed over the years—but one thing remains constant: our runners are the best NEPA has to offer!

Two of our past winners, who have each won multiple times, are not only outstanding athletes but also serve as inspirations to the next generation as cross country and track coaches. Robert Moulton, who coaches at Crestwood High School, first won the Cherry Blossom Run at age 21 in 2014. He went on to win three more times in 2015, 2019, and 2023.

Amy Rome, who coaches at Dallas High School, was the top female finisher twenty-six years ago and later claimed victory in 2002 and 2008. These two coaches are true inspirations, demonstrating both their dedication to the sport and their athletes. They continue to show their support by running in our races and have even become division winners in recent Vince Wojnar Triple Crown series. Their class and commitment are qualities their athletes can truly admire and strive to emulate.

As part of our 50th anniversary festivities, previous Cherry Blossom winners receive a free race entry and can email us to secure their spot.
