An Early Wilkes-Barre Trailblazer
The Father Murgaš Slovak Heritage Room at King’s College is a dedication to one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s greatest minds. The room showcases the achievements of Father Jozef Murgaš. He was a priest, scientist, botanist, and artist.
During the 20th century, Murgaš made tremendous strides in the field of radio transmissions. In 1905, he established communication between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, spanning 20 miles. His work proved instrumental to the invention of the modern-day radio.
The Slovak Heritage Room, you can see some of Murgaš’s personal belongings. You can see his robes, his desk, his butterfly collection, and even a few of his paintings. Some pieces detail his Wilkes-Barre to Scranton transmission. The room also serves as a monument to Father Murgaš and his contributions to science
