Spring Brook Water Company Building

Spring Brook Water Company Building

The Spring Brook Water Supply Company building is a distinguished example of early 20th-century architecture that reflects the city’s industrial growth and commitment to architectural excellence. Completed in 1910, this four-story edifice served as the headquarters for the Wilkes-Barre Water Company.

Architectural Significance

Designed by the architectural firm Welsh, Sturdevant, and Poggi, the building is a notable representation of the Neoclassical Revival style. Its façade is adorned with intricately carved dolphins that appear to spout water from the cornice, a playful yet elegant nod to the building’s original function. This decorative element evokes the fountains of Baroque Rome, blending classical motifs with the building’s utilitarian purpose. The structure’s symmetrical design, use of classical columns, and detailed ornamentation exemplify the architectural trends of the period.

King’s College acquired the building and it is now known as the Mulligan Center for Engineering.
