Designed by local architect Ralph M. Herr and completed in 1925, the Temple Israel synagogue showcases a harmonious blend of Byzantine Revival and Moorish Revival styles. The exterior features a striking copper dome, reflecting the influence of Albert Gottlieb’s design for Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Newark, New Jersey. The façade is adorned with buff tapestry brick, complemented by granite and polychrome terra cotta trimmings. The interior is equally captivating, highlighted by a Classical Revival ark and a stunning stained glass dome crafted by Richard Spiers and Son of New York City.
