Lake Wallenpaupack is one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s top outdoor destinations — a 5,700-acre lake in at the center of the Pocono Lake Region, originally built in the 1920s to generate hydroelectric power. Today, it’s a favorite destination for anyone who loves being on or near the water. Whether you’re cruising on a boat, casting a line, traveling through the Pocono Mountains, or simply relaxing by the water, the lake offers plenty of things to do year-round.

Stretching 13 miles across Pike and Wayne counties, Lake Wallenpaupack is easy to reach via Route 6. Along its 52 miles of shoreline, you’ll find marinas, public boat launches, a sandy public swimming beach, campgrounds, and scenic walking trails. It’s the kind of place where you can pack in the adventure or kick back and take it slow—any time of year.

Public Boat Launches Around Lake Wallenpaupack

There’s nothing quite like a day on the water at Lake Wallenpaupack. Load up the cooler, grab your fishing rods and head out early to catch the sunrise from your boat. Cruise the 52 miles of lake shoreline, drop anchor in a quiet cove, or invite the whole crew for an afternoon pontoon ride. Whether you’re reeling in bass or just soaking up the sun, the lake is the perfect setting for every kind of boat day.

And if you’re more into thrills than chill, bring your jet ski or wakeboard and let the fun begin. With wide-open stretches of water and plenty of room to play, Wallenpaupack is made for fast runs, tubing and towing. From early summer through fall, Lake Wallenpaupack is the place to be with plenty of space for everyone.

Lake Wallenpaupack has several public boat ramps, so it’s easy to launch your vessel no matter where you’re coming from.

You’ll find public access to the lake at the following locations:

  • Mangan Cove Boat Launch — PA-590, Hawley, PA
    Located on the northeastern end of Lake Wallenpaupack off Route 6 near the Wayne County side of the lake, Mangan Cove Boat Launch is operated by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
    Amenities: Boat ramp, parking lot, restrooms, fishing pier, picnic area
  • Ironwood Point Boat Launch — 155 Burns Hill Road, Greentown, PA
    Located on the southwestern shore of Lake Wallenpaupack.
    Amenities: Boat ramp, day-use parking, camping, seasonal and daily slip rentals. A daily launch fee applies, but is waived for registered campers.
  • Caffrey Recreation Area — 431 Lakeshort Drive, Lakeville, PA
    Located on the western shore of Lake Wallenpaupack.
    Amenities: Boat launch, slip docks, parking, camping, camp store, gas dock.
  • Wilsonville Recreation Area — 113 Ammon Drive, Hawley, PA
    Located on the eastern shore of Lake Wallenpaupack.
    Amenities: Boat launch, slip docks, gas dock, camping, camp store, 2-mile Lake Trail. Located next to Palmyra Township Public Beach.
  • Ledgedale Recreation Area — 263 Ledgedale Road, Greentown, PA
    Located on the southernmost tip of Lake Wallenpaupack.
    Amenities: Daily-use boat launch, seasonal boat slips, kayak rentals, camping. $10 daily launch fee includes trailer parking.

Semi-private boat launches are available at 1st Klas Marina, Walt’s Landing and Capri Marina and require permission or a fee for use.

Boat rentals are a great way to experience the lake in summer — grab a group of friends, pack a picnic and spend the day floating. Pontoons are great for family outings, while fishing boats give anglers a chance to chase bass, walleye and more. If you’re craving more action, rent a jet ski or try tubing or wakeboarding. Prefer something slower paced? Paddle around the lake in a kayak and enjoy the scenery up close. No matter your speed or style, local outfitters make it easy to dive into the adventure.

Fishing Tackle Loaner Program

Thanks to the Fishing Tackle Loaner Program at the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center next to Palmyra Township Public Beach, visitors can borrow rods, reels and tackle. Whether you’re trying fishing for the first time or simply forgot your supplies, this free program makes it easy to cast a line at Lake Wallenpaupack.

Just bring your driver’s license, fill out a quick form, and you’re ready to go. The Visitors Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Swimming & Public Beach Access at Lake Wallenpaupack

When the summer sun is hot, there’s no better way to cool off than a swim in Lake Wallenpaupack. Known for its clean, refreshing water and scenic shoreline, the lake is a great place to spend the day splashing, floating and soaking in the sunshine. It’s a favorite summer tradition for locals and visitors alike — whether you’re taking a quick dip or making a whole day of it.

Palmyra Township Public Beach is the lake’s designated public swimming area, located just off Route 6 near Hawley. Open seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the beach features a roped-off swim area with shaded picnic areas, restrooms and a snack stand.

Admission:

  • $2 for children ages 2–12 and adults over 64
  • Free for children under 2
