Green Dog Barkery – Wyoming, PA

Green Dog Barkery was started as a dream of Michele Pertl’s daughter Madison, who always had a great love for dogs and the environment. ‘Green’ in Green Dog is synonymous with natural health and environmental sustainability—two key focus areas for the business. Michele and her husband Scott retired from their corporate careers to help launch Maddie’s dream in May 2024. Their mission is to provide quality, sustainable, and community-driven pet care for both dogs and cats.

Handcrafted Treats and Holistic Pet Care

At Green Dog Barkery, artisan dog and cat treats are hand-crafted in their on-site bakery using 100% human-grade ingredients, with a focus on organic and locally sourced components. In addition to treats, the store offers a full line of quality pet products—including food, toys, leashes, harnesses—and features an in-store dog self-wash.

The space also serves as a hub for off-leash dog socialization and training. With an on-site trainer, Green Dog Barkery hosts rescue adoption events, vaccination clinics, and educational sessions on responsible pet ownership, nutrition, and wellness.

In addition to their high-quality ingredients, the staff at Green Dog Barkery brings health and nutritional expertise to every interaction.

Community at the Core

Green Dog Barkery actively partners with local businesses, farms, artisans, and rescue organizations. They’ve hosted adoption events, creative fundraisers, and food donation drives to support local dog and cat rescues. Their collaborative approach fosters a sense of togetherness that goes beyond the paws at their doorstep.

Green Dog Barkery features ‘The Wheel of Caring’—a fun, interactive way to support local rescues. Customers who donate $1 to help purchase food for rescues get to spin the wheel, which includes prizes like dog treats, coupons, and gifts from local businesses. The initiative supports both rescues and local entrepreneurs, and is a hit with customers.

Why NEPA?

NEPA is home to the Pertl family and an area they know well. With a high rate of pet ownership and a need for stores focused on total pet health and social well-being, Green Dog Barkery fills an important gap. Total health includes proper pet nutrition as well as the ability to build socialization skills. Michele and her team believes in creating a community where pets and their owners thrive together.  Their concept of combining retail, nutrition, wellness expertise, and socialization was an unmet opportunity in NEPA.

Mission in Action

Two back-to-back holiday events—‘Haunted Howls Trail of Treats’ and ‘Night at the North Pole’—proved the community’s desire for interactive pet experiences. The Halloween event featured trick-or-treat stations for dogs and a partnership with Breaker Brewing for the humans, drawing over 100 dogs. The North Pole event included paw print ornaments, lick art, and painting, with proceeds supporting the SPCA of Luzerne County. Scheduled for just one hour, the event welcomed over 50 dogs, showcasing the power of local partnerships and community engagement.
