Support Local this Spring and ‘Hop Around Downtown’
A fun shopping event is blooming this spring in the heart of the Electric City: Hop Around Downtown. On Saturday, April 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., participating businesses will showcase spring lines and gift items for Easter. The event is part of a series of Scranton Tomorrow support local initiatives. From trendy to classic styles, Downtown Scranton boutiques offer a unique, personalized, and enjoyable shopping experience.

Celebrate the classics
A staple in the business district for more than a decade, Over the Moon gift shop specializes in registry services for weddings and baby showers. Showcasing classic styles, the boutique also offers baby and children’s clothing, including casual and special occasion wear. The shop is among the retailers participating in Hop Around Downtown.

“Spring is shower season,” said Kathi Whitney Davis, owner of Over the Moon
“We have many gift options and they can be personalized, which always adds a special touch.” With upcoming spring dances, the boutique’s line of special occasion wear is also popular this time of year. “We’re very fortunate to be in a community where people support us,” Davis said. “We’re blessed in many ways, but we’ve certainly had to keep our creative juices flowing to continue to bring people out.” Events such as the Hop Around are one way to do just that.
Be sure to stop by Over the Moon at 123 N. Washington Avenue on April12, and follow the shop on social media for the newest spring arrivals!

Shop Small / Shop Local
Amy Salvatori, owner of Runway Boutique, a contemporary women’s clothing store at 128 N. Washington Avenue, said events like this one serve as an important reminder to shop small instead of buying online. “There’s nothing like going out and being able to try on the perfect outfit,” she said. “For Spring 2025, expect to see pastels like buttery yellow, pale pink, and pistachio green, mixed with bold colors, such as cobalt blue and bright red. Boho chic, nautical vibes with feminine influences, along with checks and animal prints seem to be the big trends of this season. Even just adding an accessory, like a fringe bag, animal print shoes, or bright jewels, can tie in this season’s trends to any outfit in your closet.”
Be sure to take advantage of the Milly Trunk Sale (20% off!) at Runway and follow the boutique on social media for new arrivals.

A whole new season
Offering the latest trendy clothes, bags, and accessories, Penn House Boutique at 314 Penn Avenue is also among the retailers participating in the event on April 12. Owners Kara Schermerhorn and Lynn Farrell are enjoying the seasonal transition from winter to spring lines. “This is a great time to do a shop around because Easter marks the beginning of Spring with fresh blooms, longer days and a renewed sense of vibrancy,” Schermerhorn said. “The season itself transforms fashion. You get out of your heavy coats and sweaters and into lighter fabrics and brighter colors.”

Add a little pop
Schermerhorn and Farrell said maxi and midi dresses are popular this season, and their new line of Bibi Lou shoes is doing very well with their customers. They also have the perfect Easter basket stuffer: shoe charms! The boutique created a shoe charm bar just before Valentine’s Day. “You can buy different laces and charms for your shoes, predominantly tennis shoes or sneakers, but people put them on UGG boots, Birkenstocks, sandals, or Mary Jane shoes,” Schermerhorn said. The trend is so popular that Penn House even hosts shoe charm parties where customers decorate their shoes in store. They can select individual charms or buy pre-packaged sets. Check out Penn House Boutique’s instagram for some truly “charming” reels and stop by the store on April 12 to peruse the latest spring styles.
“We want everyone to shop small and we want businesses in the Scranton area to blossom because it’s best for all of us,” Schermerhorn said. “The more of us there are, the better it is for all of us. Every boutique in Scranton has its own style, and that’s the beauty of Scranton.”
