Exploring Brooks Mine at Nay Aug Park In Scranton

Last weekend we headed to Scranton for an up close look at the newly opened Brooks Coal Mine in Nay Aug Park. Since the early 1900’s, the mine has been used to showcase the working conditions of coal mining to the general public. However, in 1975, the tours stopped and the mine was said to be permanently closed. That is until a group called the Underground Miners began its renovation and was subsequently given approval for tours by the PA State Mine Inspectors in 2023.

During our visit, we learned about the history of the region’s most sought after fuel source, anthracite coal. We also had the chance to see live mining demonstrations and even got a tour inside the mine. And as we heard the stories of families who spent most of their days underground, we couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the work they performed.

The Brooks Coal Mine will be open to the public every Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. until November 4th. Check out some of the highlights below!
