“You can’t ‘Luze’ in Luzerne” – Especially at Shelley’s Pizza
There is a classic saying in my community and that is, “You can’t ‘Luze’ in Luzerne.” That statement holds true for Shelley’s Pizza on Union Street, a staple of the community and my core memories from childhood to now.
Shelley’s Pizza is amazing, and don’t just take it from me today—take it from elementary school me, way before I chose to become a business student at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. For years, a birthday card I made for Shelley himself hung on the wall, right when you first walked into the iconic red, blue, and white building. The card stated, “The best pizza,” and it is a claim I still make today.
Shelley’s has not only been a staple in the Luzerne community, but also a big part of my life for as long as I can remember
Shelley’s has been around since 1972 and was a place my parents used to get pizza from long before I was born. In my lifetime, Shelley’s has given me many great memories and has been featured at many family parties, including graduations, retirements, and birthdays. Any celebration in my family is worthy of a Shelley’s pizza. Truly, no family gathering is complete without stacked boxes of Shelley’s. I have been able to introduce this pizza to many of my fellow college students, and it has been a perfect place to pick up a quick bite before a study session, too.
Shelley’s features an easy ordering system which provides you with a number for your pizza. You then wait until you see your number on the screen in the back and pull up to the drive-thru to pick up your pizza. This feature makes Shelley’s unique, giving you a way to get your food without even having to leave your car!
Their thin and perfectly crisp pizza makes it a great grab, and do not be scared to order extra because it tastes just as good the next day
Getting the pizza with Shelley’s sweet sauce also gives the pizza a unique twist. There is not a single person in my house that will not eat Shelley’s, including my Bernese Mountain Dog, Thanos, who begs for pizza crust as soon as he sees me carrying the Shelley’s boxes through the front door.
As I get ready for graduation and changes occur in my life, one thing is for sure that Shelley’s pizza will remain. Hopefully, when given a try, it becomes a staple in your life, too, if it isn’t already.
No matter what the reason for picking up a pizza from Shelley’s, just know you won’t be disappointed because “You can’t ‘Luze’ in Luzerne.”
