Mission Statement
Our mission is to preserve the rich anthracite mining heritage of Northeastern Pennsylvania for future generations.
The No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford preserves NEPA’s rich mining history. They hold educational tours in the world’s oldest continuously operating anthracite coal mine, which was open from 1855 to 1972. These tours give visitors a personal experience and understanding of the life and culture of immigrant coal miners. They also operate a museum with tools, equipment and other artifacts from the Industrial Revolution.
The board of directors, members and volunteers maintain the coal mine and museum. They are dedicated to sharing the rich and diverse ethnic heritage of the region, along with the values of the immigrants who came to NEPA to pursue the American Dream.
