No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum | Preserving coal heritage and immigrant history in Lansford

The No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum in Lansford is a nonprofit organization that keeps the story of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s coal mining past alive. Housed in the world’s oldest continuously operating anthracite coal mine—open from 1855 to 1972—this historic site offers underground mine tours and an extensive museum. Visitors gain a first-hand look at the work, hardship and perseverance of the region’s immigrant coal miners.

Immersive Tours & Educational Experiences

Guided tours take guests deep inside the historic No. 9 Mine for a close-up view of 19th-century mining life. The museum features original tools, mining equipment and Industrial Revolution-era artifacts, providing context for the underground experience. Through storytelling and authentic displays, the site highlights the contributions of generations of working families who shaped the region.

Community-Driven Preservation

Operated by a dedicated board, volunteers and community members, the nonprofit works to honor the cultural diversity and values of NEPA’s immigrant labor force. Their mission is to educate future generations while celebrating the strength, sacrifice and spirit of those who helped build the region. The museum also hosts seasonal events and welcomes group tours and school visits.

No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum brings NEPA’s mining legacy to life and honors the immigrants who fueled its growth.
