“Walking in Their Shoes: Heroes of the 48th Pennsylvania Infantry” presented by Civil War historian & author, Ben Varner. Join Ben Varner, Civil War regimental historian and founder of the “Walking in Their Shoes Project,” as he tells the tale of the 48th Pennsylvania Regiment. These men, the “Schuylkill Regiment,” came from all over Schuylkill County and northern Berks and fought in some of the most storied battles of the Civil War. From New Berne to Antietam, Fredericksburg to Petersburg these were the men who put the “Crater” in the Battle of the Crater.

The “Walking in Their Shoes Project” was created to keep the memories of local Civil War Veterans alive, by identifying, verifying and cataloging Civil War veterans in local cemeteries and telling their stories. Volunteer researchers from Allegheny, Lebanon, Berks, Schuylkill and Carbon counties have verified the service of over 1,200 soldiers in more than 30 cemeteries, with more waiting to be discovered.
