Urban Oasis

Just a short walk from downtown and across the Market Street Bridge, Kirby Park offers a vast expanse of green space perfect for relaxation and recreation. Visitors can enjoy picnic areas, playgrounds, a serene pond, walking paths, a running track, softball fields, volleyball courts, tennis courts, and pavilions, as well as the Luzerne County Levee Trail that passes through the park. A highlight of the park is its inclusive playground, featuring 11 pieces of equipment designed for children of all abilities, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The park also offers direct access to the Susquehanna River.

This beautiful 52-acre park was a generous gift to the city of Wilkes-Barre from the family of Fred Morgan Kirby, a five-and-dime merchant who opened his first store in Wilkes-Barre in 1887.

Kirby Park hosts several special events throughout the year, including the city’s Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration and the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in April.

During winter, the park’s levee and rolling hills become a winter wonderland, ideal for sleigh riding and snow tubing. In the summer, locals can be seen laying out blankets to soak up some sun and watch the park come alive with children, couples, and pets.
