Lacawac Sanctuary: A Peaceful Escape in the Northern Poconos

Tucked away on 550 acres in Lake Ariel, PA, Lacawac Sanctuary is a peaceful escape that combines environmental education, nature conservation, and scientific research. Located near the shores of Lake Wallenpaupack in the Pocono Lake Region, this nonprofit nature preserve offers a unique blend of habitats, including lush forests, open meadows, wetlands, and pristine glacial lakes.

Trails and Outdoor Exploration

Lacawac boasts over 8 miles of hiking trails open daily from dawn to dusk, free of charge. These scenic hikes are perfect for all skill levels, whether you’re out for a peaceful walk, nature photography, or a deeper connection with the outdoors. The Lake Lacawac Trail offers a quiet path to the shores of one of the region’s most protected glacial lakes, while the Big Lake Trail provides a scenic loop with access for biking near the Lake Wallenpaupack area. Dogs are welcome to join in the fun too. Lacawac Sanctuary kindly asks that all dogs are leashed when hiking the trails (and don’t forget to clean up after your dog, of course).

Education and Summer Camps

As an environmental education center and field station, Lacawac Sanctuary offers hands-on science programs, public workshops, and seasonal events for all ages. Their popular summer camps inspire young nature lovers with hands-on exploration, outdoor games, environmental learning, and fun in the forest. These programs help cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards.

Conservation and Community

Lacawac Sanctuary is also a hub for scientific research through its field station, which supports studies in ecology, climate science, and lake conservation. Visitors can learn more about this vital work through guided hikes, seasonal events, and interpretive displays throughout the property.

Whether you’re looking for a scenic spring hike, a peaceful spot to bike, or an educational experience for the whole family, Lacawac Sanctuary offers a meaningful and memorable way to explore the Pocono Mountains.
