History goes beyond the surface.

Delve deep into NEPA’s coal mining history… 300 feet beneath the earth to be exact! Experience the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, one of USA Today’s America’s Best Underground Attractions. Located at McDade Park, this tour brings history to life as you explore the tunnels of a real coal mine.

This underground adventure will take you inside a day in the life of a coal miner. You’ll hop on the mine car and descend below the surface. When you reach the bottom, you’ll see what the mine would have looked like when it opened in 1860.

Your guide will lead you through the tunnels and explain the mining process. You’ll walk the same paths as the heroic miners and learn how they powered the anthracite coal industry.

The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour is open from April through November. The tour lasts approximately one hour and is partially handicap accessible.
