Lackawanna State Park—A Top Outdoor Destination in Lackawanna County

Lackawanna State Park in North Abington Twp. is one of NEPA’s premier year-round outdoor recreation escapes. Just 10 miles from the city of Scranton, it’s one of 18 Pennsylvania state parks in the region and a favorite for hiking, fishing, boating and more. With over 1,400 acres of forest and fields surrounding Lackawanna Lake, it offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation and is a top outdoor destination in Lackawanna County.

Lackawanna Lake and Trout Fishing

At the heart of the park lies the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake, ideal for boating, kayaking, and trout fishing. The park features three boat launches and seasonal rentals for canoes and kayaks. Fishing is popular along the shoreline, and kids under 12 can cast their lines at nearby Trostle Pond. In the colder months, the lake becomes a top NEPA spot for ice fishing.

Scenic Trails and Hikes

With more than 18 miles of trails, Lackawanna State Park is a haven for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Spring brings wildflowers and migrating birds, making it a perfect season for a scenic hike. The Abington Trail welcomes horseback riders, while other trails loop around the lake and through shaded forests. A short hike to the park’s dam area offers a peaceful waterfall view where water flows into the South Branch of Tunkhannock Creek.

Family Fun and Year-Round Activities

The park’s amenities include picnic areas, playgrounds, and a pool and splash pad complex In the fall, the trails become a kaleidoscope of color, perfect for autumn foliage walks. Winter visitors enjoy seasonal state park fun as well, including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing.

Camping and Education

Lackawanna State Park offers year-round camping accommodations with tent and trailer sites, as well as cottage and yurt rentals. The park also hosts educational programs and nature camps for kids focused on wildlife, ecology, and outdoor skills. Whether you’re in search of spring hikes, fall color, or snowy serenity, this park delivers all year long.
