Honoring Local Athletes
The Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1985. They endeavor to perpetuate the memory of local athletes, male and female, who have brought lasting fame and recognition to the state of Pennsylvania through their athletic achievements and community involvement.
Also eligible for such distinction are those individuals who have brought similar recognition to the state through their contributions to sports in general in managerial, promotional, and other influential capacities.
You can visit the Luzerne County & Northeastern Chapter Sports Hall of Fame Memorabilia Museum, which is located at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport in Avoca. The exhibit displays artifacts and pictures of the most recent class of inductees and several of the Northeast Chapter’s most storied athletes. The current sports spotlight area is dedicated to legendary football player Harold “Red” Grange, a member of the chapter’s 2021 class. It features some of the most unique artifacts donated by the family of “The Galloping Ghost” himself.
