McDade Park—Scranton’s All-Season Playground

Nestled on the west side of the City of Scranton, McDade Park offers 180 acres of scenic outdoor and recreational space for residents and visitors to enjoy throughout all four seasons of the year. This beloved city park, managed by Scranton Parks & Recreation, is more than just a green space—it’s a community hub filled with activities, natural beauty, and local history.

During the warmer months, McDade is a top spot for outdoor fun. Families flock to the splash pad and swimming pool—one of the best places to cool off in NEPA. Kids love the state-of-the-art playground, which includes accessible features like wheelchair-friendly swings and slides, along with two designated quiet areas designed for children on the autism spectrum. A fishing pond, butterfly garden, and shaded picnic areas with charcoal grills round out the park’s summer favorites.

Fitness and sports lovers can take advantage of paved walking trails, basketball and bocce ball courts, public tennis courts, as well as a softball field. The park also features two large pavilions, perfect for family reunions, birthday parties, and community gatherings.

McDade Park is also home to two of Scranton’s most significant historic attractions—the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour. These sites offer visitors a powerful look into NEPA’s coal mining roots and are a must-see for history buffs of all ages.

When winter arrives, McDade Park transforms into a snowy wonderland. Grab your sled and head for the hills—its wide-open slopes are a local favorite for snow day adventures.

Whether you’re splashing in the pool, learning about the region’s rich past, or just enjoying a quiet picnic in the shade, McDade Park is a year-round destination that brings the Scranton community together.
