A Natural Luzerne County Gem

The pristine, 48-acre, spring-fed Moon Lake serves as the centerpiece of this densely forested Recreation Area in Hunlock Creek. The Moon Lake State Forest Recreation Area is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Located within the reaches of the Pinchot State Forest, this recreation area is a local favorite for so many fresh-air activities.

The dense woods open up to bright, green fields, teeming with wildflowers. And the cool, trout-stocked lake is a popular stop during fishing season. Bird watchers visit Moon Lake throughout the year, and the abundant wildlife make for most interesting nature walks.

The recreation area features about 20 miles of multiple-use trails that flow through the forest. The Moon Lake Trail Crew works alongside the Pinchot Forest District to maintain, plan, and build new trails. Visit the Moon Lake Trail Crew on Facebook for upcoming volunteer opportunities and activities at the Moon Lake State Forest Recreation Area.

Recreational opportunities don’t just end at the trails. Moon Lake Recreation Area offers twelve designated campsites as well as three pavilions. A group campsite is available for groups larger than ten who have an appropriate agreement with the Forest District. Please visit the camping tab on the website to learn more information.
