St. Mark’s & St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jim Thorpe is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture with a rich local history dating back to 1835. Designed by renowned architect Richard Upjohn and completed in 1869, this stone church stands prominently on Race Street and continues to welcome worshippers and visitors alike. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, it remains a spiritual and architectural treasure in Carbon County.
The church features tiered interior levels, original Minton tile flooring, Black Walnut woodwork, and stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Charles Gibson. Other historic highlights include an Austin pipe organ, a rare Otis cage elevator, and a Caen stone reredos modeled after the one in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Commissioned artwork, hand-carved wood, and brass detailing further elevate the church’s interior.
Guided Tours & Programs
Tours are available Thursdays through Sundays, May through October, with private tours available by request. Visitors can explore the sanctuary, chapel, Sunday School rooms, and art-filled interiors. Walking tours of historic Jim Thorpe, cemetery tours on select Fridays, and even donut tours featuring Donerds Donuts are also offered.
Historic Legacy
Founded with the support of prominent local families including Asa Packer, the church has long been a part of Jim Thorpe’s cultural and religious identity. The adjacent Asa Packer Memorial Building and later renovations by his daughter, Mary Packer Cummings, added to its lasting significance.
