Breaking Clays for Kids Fundraiser Celebrates Its 7th Year
Friendly competition was in the air at Rock Mountain Sporting Clays near Springville today during the 7th Annual Breaking Clays for Kids. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Children’s Advocacy Center of Susquehanna & Wyoming Counties.
This year’s event drew a record number of participants with over 70 competitors.
“There are a great number of shooters who have been here since the beginning, so just seeing them come back and bring a few more people every year has been a phenomenal process to watch,” said Janine Fortney, director of the Children’s Advocacy Center.
The morning started with registration, a safety briefing and a discussion of the center’s services.
“For us, it’s something that’s different. Everyone does a golf outing,” said Sean Gerow, CEO of Family Service Association of NEPA. “It also gives us an opportunity to provide education to folks about what we do.”
The teams headed onto the course, which included 17 stations. Local shooting clubs, youth teams, corporate groups and more joined for a beautiful day in the Endless Mountains.
“I just love that we’re able to be out here, and it is a safe setting. Everyone can enjoy themselves,” said Fortney. “You don’t have to be an expert to participate.”
The Children’s Advocacy Center of Susquehanna & Wyoming Counties is part of Family Service Association of NEPA. The center provides free support and services for children who have experienced trauma or abuse. It was established in Montrose in 2015.
“The CAC’s main purpose is to work with a comprehensive team approach to ensure that kids minimize how many times and how many places they have to tell that story,” explained Fortney. “They’re able to do it at one place at one time. It’s just a much more comfortable space.”
The center also provides a closer, more convenient resource for rural communities. Families no longer have to drive an hour or more to receive services in Wilkes-Barre or Scranton.
Family Service Association is a not-for-profit, non-sectarian organization that works to build resilient families and thriving communities. The Children’s Advocacy Center is one of many programs supported by Family Service Association. Visit their website or Facebook page to learn more.
