Free Children’s Program Returns for Summer 2022
Diamond City Partnership is keeping kids busy over summer break with Downtown Discoveries. This program leads kids on a scavenger hunt through downtown Wilkes-Barre and gives them the chance to win prizes.
Downtown Discoveries kicks off on June 25 with Kids’ Fest at Midtown Village in Wilkes-Barre. This free family event will include face painting, balloon art, crafts, games and more. Kids will have a chance to see a City of Wilkes-Barre fire truck and meet characters like Princess Elsa and Tux the Penguin. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m.
During Kids’ Fest, children will be able to pick up a Downtown Discoveries passport. The passports include prize stops at participating local businesses. Children can show their passports to receive a small gift.
There are also activity stops, which encourage families to attend downtown attractions and events like the farmers’ market and the Rockin’ the River concerts. Kids can check off the boxes in the passport booklet as they explore the city.
“It’s very interactive,” said Shelby Monk, Marketing and Event Coordinator at Diamond City Partnership. “It’s meant to give kids something fun to do over the summer.”
Children ages 12 and under can participate in the passport program. Kids can turn in their completed passports at the Osterhout Free Library through July 31 to receive a free book and be entered for a chance to win one of two grand prizes.
“I hope that it brings kids and their families to downtown Wilkes-Barre to really discover things that they haven’t before,” said Monk.
Passports will be available at the Kids’ Fest event on June 25. The Osterhout Free Library, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA and Visit Luzerne County will have copies available as well. You can also download a printable copy.
