Hanover Township: A Quiet, Suburban Town with a Busy Side
Hanover Township, in central Luzerne County, traces its founding back to the late 1800s. As an integral part of Greater Wilkes-Barre, this small, blue-collar town enjoys a proud history of coal mining, the railroad industry and farming. By the mid 20th century, due in large part the township’s convenient location, it became a central hub for the region’s growing manufacturing and distribution economy.
Outside of the industrial corridor, Hanover Township is mostly made up of quiet, residential neighborhoods, planned communities, a top-notch school district, a few farms and a busy business district. It’s bordered in the northwest by the Susquehanna River for a few miles and meets up with the Pinchot State Forest in the southeast.
Hanover Township is a progressive community with a long history of self-reliance and blue-collar grit. From one of the first, hard-fought settlements in the Wyoming Valley to an important hub of the hard coal industry, Hanover Township has historically demonstrated a predisposition toward hard work.

Hanover Township is recognized as the most populous township in Luzerne County. It is a fact not lost on the major employers that call the township home. The Hanover Industrial Estates and adjacent Hanover Crossings Business Park employ over 3,500 local workers. Its proximity to more densely-populated areas like Wilkes-Barre and Nanticoke coupled with its ease-of-access via the Luzerne County Transportation Authority make for an easy commute.
