Everhart 115 – The Celebration Continues
Everhart 115, a yearlong celebration of the Everhart Museum’s 115th anniversary is off to a great start in 2023.
As we head toward summer, we’re getting ready for festivities honoring the museum’s history and founder Dr. Isaiah Fawkes Everhart’s legacy! We’re excited for the next few months of exhibitions, educational programs, and events, and look forward to welcoming all of the communities of Northeastern Pennsylvania to experience what the Everhart Museum has to offer.
It was Memorial Day weekend 1908 that the Museum first opened its doors, and this year we mark the unofficial start of summer with Everhart 115 Community Day on Saturday, May 20. This free community event is a thank you to all of Northeastern Pennsylvania for its support over the years and features free admission from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and free arts, crafts, music, entertainment, and demonstrations from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. both inside and outside the Museum and in beautiful Nay Aug Park. The event includes the following:
- The painting of a community mural of the Everhart Museum
- Music by Doug Smith’s Dixieland All-Stars
- Rocks and minerals demonstrations by Steve Carter of Penn Minerals
- Guided hikes around Nay Aug Park with Jane Frye
- Free turn-of-the-century-themed photo booth
- Free cake sponsored by Riccardo’s Market
- Local history scavenger by the Lackawanna Historical Society
- Mead-making presentation by Dan Schreffler of Space Time Mead & Cider Works
- More to be announced!
Everhart 115 Community Day coincides with the opening of the Founder’s Gallery on Thursday, May 18. This exhibition, on long-term view, traces Museum founder Dr. Isaiah Fawkes Everhart’s life from his beginnings in rural Southeastern Pennsylvania, through his career as a surgeon in the Civil War, to his settling in Scranton and establishment of the Museum that bears his name. His story is told in his own words taken from journal entries; through objects from the Museum’s collection, including the many taxidermy specimens he completed; and through rarely seen photos from the Museum’s archives.
The Founder’s Gallery and Everhart 115 Community Day are made possible through the generous gift of the Munley Family and Munley Law in memory of Robert W. Munley.
Opening June 8, Wild Bees rounds out the exhibition schedule for spring 2023. A traveling exhibition of work by photojournalist and writer Paula Sharp and photographer Ross Eatman, Wild Bees features colorful high-resolution photographs of bees of many varieties in their natural habitats exhibiting their natural behaviors. Beekeeping tools and wares from the Everhart collection are also included. Be on the lookout for lots of related educational programming and events!
The Everhart’s Monthly Family Workshop series continues this spring with a National Garden Month workshop on April 29 with Orna Clum of Clum Family Farms, followed by an Asian Pacific Islander Month workshop in May with the artist Sachiko and a LGBTQ+ Pride Month workshop in June with painter and muralist Sam Kuchwara. Check out our monthly family workshops page for updates.
Other events happening in the late spring include a free planned giving workshop and lunch on May 26 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., featuring financial planner Scott Lynett. To finish the spring schedule, on June 10, the Museum is offering free admission and activities as the Electric City Flower Show returns to Nay Aug Park.
And stay tuned as the Everhart gears up for summer and our first major outdoor event since before COVID, the Gaelic Gathering at the Everhart on July 14!
