Popular Pottsville Race Includes Plenty Of Beer
Racing enthusiasts and beer lovers near and far converge on Pottsville each spring for the annual Yuengling Light Lager Jogger 5K run/walk. More than just a race, it’s a celebratory occasion the entire town takes part in. From action-packed pre- and post-race festivities to block parties with live music, food and entertainment, and of course, plenty of brews, it’s one of the biggest racing events of the year in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Started in 2013, the Lager Jogger draws a sold-out crowd of 3,500 participants, with plenty of local racers and those who come from around the country for this unique experience. The one-of-a-kind race kicks off and concludes at America’s oldest brewery, D.G. Yuengling and Sons, Inc., a family-run since 1829.
Thousands of Yuengling fans from all over flock to fill the streets, restaurants and pubs in Pottsville to support the race and take part in the festive atmosphere in the days leading up to the event, including Yuengling brewery tours.
Then, the race steps off Saturday morning. Runners and walkers of all skill levels participate, from those looking to clock their fastest 3.1 miles to those there for the good vibes and delicious beer. Participants begin their trek from the brewery at the corner of Fifth and Mahantongo Sts., weaving through the historic community and quaint neighborhoods of Pottsville before looping back across the finish line on Seventh St. for the traditional post-race Lager and awards ceremony.
The top three female and male finishers are awarded gifts and prizes in nine age brackets, from little joggers under 10 to those 80+. Proceeds from the race, organized and timed by CK Running, benefit Team Red, White, and Blue, a nonprofit health and wellness community for veterans.
All participants receive a Yuengling Light Lager Jogger branded pint class, official race t-shirt, two free 12 oz. Yuengling Light Lagers (21+), free brewery tours and admission to the post-race party.
Don’t Miss the Costumes and Afterparty
Inarguably, one of the high points of the race are the costumes. Scores of striders dress to impress, from beer-themed garb to pierogi costumes, for the chance to win prizes and be crowned best individual, duo or group (up to 6) costume.
Of course, the talk of the town is the afterparty. With live music, tasty food vendors, fresh brews and over 40 vendors to explore lining Mahantongo St., the camaraderie and post-race fun are the perfect way to wrap up the Yuengling-filled weekend.
