Mission Statement

Our mission is to investigate, help prosecute and prevent cruelty to animals while also promoting adoption awareness and humane education plus responsible pet ownership. We promote this all while we care for the animals surrendered to our shelter to the best of our ability every day until we find them new loving homes.

Griffin Pond Animal Shelter was established in 1938 as The Humane Society of Lackawanna County. Griffin Pond provides shelter and attentive care for homeless, unwanted and abused animals. They also provide care and support for sick, injured or elderly animals brought to the shelter for various reasons such as owner surrender or cruelty case investigations. The shelter cares for over 200 animals on a daily basis.

Griffin Pond Animal Shelter is entirely funded by private donations. The shelter does not receive any federal, state or county funding. They rely on fundraising events and the generosity of caring people. With your support and the hard work done by volunteers and staff, these animals are given a second chance.

Get Involved
Griffin Pond is always looking for committed volunteers to join the care team. Their volunteers play a vital role in ensuring that the shelter runs smoothly and that all the animals receive the love and attention they need. Volunteer activities vary based on daily needs, but the typical tasks include dog walking, cleaning cages or kennels, putting away donations, doing laundry or dishes, or lending a hand at community events.

Check out our video showing you what a day in the life of a volunteer at Griffin Pond looks like. Your time and effort make a significant difference for these animals, as well as the shelter staff.  Plus, volunteering is an incredibly rewarding experience. Don’t miss an opportunity to make a positive impact on your community.

Don’t shop. Adopt!
If you’re in the market for a new best friend, the options are in abundance at Griffin Pond. They have plenty of helpful pages and links on their website that give you a sense of what the adoption process would be like. They even list their adoptable pets online, so you can see all the adorable faces and set up some meet and greets.

Fosters Save Lives
Fostering is like temporary ownership, full of love and care when pets need it most. When you become a foster, you take care of your foster pet as though it were your own until Griffin Pond finds the animal the right forever home. Fostering is extremely beneficial in helping a pet get used to life in a healthy home, making for a smoother transition when they are officially adopted. Shelters are very limited in capacity, so the more committed foster homes there are, the more lives that can be saved.
