Anthracite Scenic Trails Association | Nonprofit preserving rail trails & outdoor access in Luzerne County

The Anthracite Scenic Trails Association (ASTA) is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization committed to transforming out-of-service railroad beds into vibrant recreational trails across Luzerne County, PA. Through trail development and land conservation, ASTA connects communities, promotes healthy lifestyles, and preserves the rich natural and historical heritage of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Their work enhances both the environment and local quality of life by creating safe, scenic spaces for walking, biking, and outdoor exploration.

Trail Creation Rooted in Conservation & Community

ASTA has been instrumental in the development and maintenance of several beloved trails in the region, including the Back Mountain Trail and the Black Diamond Trail. These trails serve as essential corridors for recreation, transportation & wildlife, allowing residents and visitors to experience NEPA’s scenic landscapes firsthand. The organization has also supported the creation of the Luzerne Creekwalk and the Rimple Loop, extending access to natural areas while protecting important habitats and historical features along the way.

Boosting Wellness, Preservation & Local Economies

By converting former railways into public trails, ASTA provides free, accessible recreation opportunities that support physical and mental well-being. Their efforts also promote local economic growth by attracting visitors and encouraging trail-related tourism and small business development. As strong advocates for environmental preservation, ASTA highlights the role of greenways in safeguarding local ecosystems and telling the story of the region’s industrial past.
