Black Scranton Project | Preserving Black history & culture in Scranton
The Black Scranton Project is a nonprofit heritage initiative that documents, celebrates and uplifts the history of African American residents in Scranton. What began as a research question has grown into a community archive and cultural platform that educates the public, supports artists and amplifies Black voices. The organization creates welcoming spaces that honor identity, inspire pride and build connection.
Documenting Local History
Through its growing archive, the Black Scranton Project collects newspaper clippings, photographs, oral histories and other materials that highlight the presence and impact of Black residents in the city. The organization also maintains a Black Business Directory, helping to preserve economic history while encouraging community support.
Creating Cultural Experiences
Public programs throughout the year include historical exhibits, community art projects and cultural events that foster unity and engagement. These experiences bring Scranton’s diverse communities together while honoring the legacy and contributions of Black individuals past and present.
The Black Scranton Project preserves local history and builds community through education, culture and celebration in Scranton.
