Owl Banding
On this episode of GO WILD with DiscoverNEPA: We head into the woods of the Poconos after dark to track Pennsylvania’s smallest owl — the Northern Saw-whet — during its fall migration. Hosted by Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center and Pocono Avian Research Center, this Project Owlnet event brings together researchers and bird lovers to monitor these elusive birds.
We join Darryl Speicher of the Monroe County Conservation District as he safely bands a saw-whet owl, collects scientific data, and releases it back into the wild. With the help of nets and recorded owl calls, this research helps build a deeper understanding of a tiny species with a long journey.
