Mission Statement
It is the mission of Ashland Community Enterprises to preserve the lore, traditions, and artifacts of the underground coal mining industry.
Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train mine tour, operating since 1962, is the longest-running of its kind and a treasured historic and educational attraction. It offers visitors a deep dive into the rich history of anthracite coal mining through two unique tours.
The Coal Mine Tour takes guests 1,800 feet into the side of Mahoney Mountain aboard a battery-operated mine car. This immersive experience explores coal mining techniques, bootleg mining, and the intricate gangways of the mine.
The second tour features a 1927 narrow-gauge steam locomotive, the Lehigh Valley CC #123. Guests enjoy a ¾-mile open-car ride along the mountainside, learning about strip mining and the Centralia mine fires, with a scenic overlook of the town of Ashland.
With a mission to preserve and share the heritage of anthracite history, this attraction invites visitors to experience a piece of Pennsylvania’s coal mining legacy.
