Mission Statement

Growing a sustainable community through education, wholesome food and healthy, active living.

The Greenhouse Project | Growing healthy communities through gardening in Scranton

The Greenhouse Project is a nonprofit based in Scranton at the James Barrett McNulty Greenhouse in Nay Aug Park. Founded to grow more than just plants, the organization cultivates wellness, sustainability and education throughout the community. By connecting people to the natural world, The Greenhouse Project promotes healthy eating, physical activity and environmental awareness for children, families and adults.

Education, Wellness & Food Justice

Through hands-on workshops and school partnerships, The Greenhouse Project teaches gardening, nutrition and the value of local food systems. Programs focus on preventing chronic disease by encouraging healthy habits from a young age. Two community gardens, a teaching garden and year-round outreach programs offer residents practical skills while fostering community connection and resilience.

Sustaining the Mission Through Local Impact

In-house plant, herb and flower sales help support the nonprofit’s mission while bringing fresh, organic options to city residents. Donations of plants to Nay Aug Park, community gardens and Scranton City Hall enhance public spaces, and the group also contributes to local hunger projects and initiatives for at-risk neighbors. Volunteers of all experience levels are always welcome to help grow and give back.

The Greenhouse Project strengthens Scranton by using gardening to cultivate health, education and community resilience.
