Inspect What You Expect: Preparing Your Archery Gear for the 2025 Season

An expression I use often, both professionally and personally, is “inspect what you expect.” It’s a simple, powerful reminder that if you want something done right, you can’t just hope for the best—you must check and confirm it yourself. This principle applies not only to leading a team, but also to preparing for hunting season.

With the 2025 archery season upon us, it’s time to set expectations for your equipment and take steps to ensure that everything you bring into the field is safe, effective, and ready to perform.

Before you shoot a single arrow, look over your strings and cables

Over time, bowstrings can fray and stretch, weakening their integrity and potentially creating a safety hazard. If you find any damage, take your bow to a professional archery shop immediately for evaluation and repair.

Whether you’re shooting a compound bow or a crossbow, regular practice is the key to consistent accuracy. Once you’re on the range, focus on repetition. Practice at distances you’re comfortable with, but also at those that simulate realistic hunting scenarios. The Pennsylvania Game Commission always emphasizes ethical shot placement—your preparation is what makes that possible.

Once you’re dialed in with your field points, the real work begins

In a perfect world, your broadheads would fly exactly like your field points. In reality, fine-tuning is often needed to get them grouping together. This step is essential for ensuring your practice translates to success in the field.

Don’t stop practicing once you’re sighted in. Continue shooting throughout the season to maintain accuracy and confidence until you finally fill that tag.

Preparation is key to a successful archery season

By taking the time to “inspect what you expect,” you’ll enter the season prepared and confident in your abilities and in your gear. Best of luck this season and stay safe out there.
