We’re teaming up with community partners all over Northeastern Pennsylvania to bring you a closer look at what makes our amazing counties, cities, towns and villages so unique. Keep your eye on this space for regular contributions from local organizations, visitors’ bureaus, tourism boards, chambers and so much more.

“Earth laughs in flowers.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson’s famous quote really does ring true. Spring blooms bring us so much joy in Northeastern Pennsylvania. In celebration of the natural beauty of our region, downtown business owners are designing creative container floral displays for all to enjoy on First Friday in June. The displays are entries in the Scranton Tomorrow Downtown Business Class category of the Electric City Flower Show, which will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nay Aug Park, 403 Arthur Avenue, Scranton.

Colorful, whimsical, wonderful! A 2023 creative container display at The Art Room, 305 Penn Avenue.

“This is our second year participating in the Electric City Flower Show,” said Liz Baldi, Business Development Director, Scranton Tomorrow. “We were thrilled with the number of businesses that entered creative container displays last year, and we couldn’t wait to do it again. This is a great opportunity for business owners to showcase their creativity and ingenuity. Their displays will be placed throughout the downtown so you can take a floral tour while you’re enjoying First Friday activities.”

To plan your self-guided floral tour of the downtown on First Friday, visit our blog for a list of participating businesses.

This 2023 display really had style thanks to the team at RD Salon & BlowDry Bar, 324 Penn Avenue.

As you stop to smell the roses, so to speak, be sure to vote for your favorite creative container displays on Scranton Tomorrow’s Facebook. Simply go to our page on June 7, and “like” the photo of your favorite display to cast your vote. The image that receives the most likes will win the popular vote. First and second place winners in the Scranton Tomorrow Downtown Business Class category will be presented with a trophy and their displays will be featured in The Winner’s Circle at the Electric City Flower Show.

Businesses throughout Downtown Scranton competed for the coveted trophy in the Scranton Tomorrow Downtown Business Class category of the Electric City Flower Show in 2023.

Scranton City Pride

The downtown floral competition is part of Scranton City Pride, a week of citywide clean-up, beautification, and community development projects in Scranton. A joint project of Scranton Tomorrow, NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania, and United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC), Scranton City Pride runs from May 31 to June 8. The program is made possible with support from American Water Charitable Foundation, Pennsylvania American Water, Penn State Master Gardeners in Lackawanna County, Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority (LHVA), and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. Media partners include Lamar Advertising and Dan Simrell Media.

In celebration of all things Scranton City Pride, we’re hosting special First Friday events from 5 to 9 p.m. at our office, 307 Linden Street. As part of the festivities, representatives from partner organizations, NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania and UNC, will be on hand to share information about volunteer opportunities. Members of Scranton Tomorrow will distribute flowers to our guests (while supplies last).
