Bringing 1776 to Life in Scranton: A Community Celebration of America at 250

In Scranton, two beloved community theaters—Actors Circle and Diva Theater—are teaming up to celebrate a moment that changed the world. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from America250PA, their upcoming musical theater production, Actors Circle and Diva Theater Present 1776: A Collaborative Semiquin Celebration, will bring neighbors together to reflect on our shared past and look toward a bright future.

America250PA Executive Director Cassandra Coleman joined project partners and local officials to celebrate the impact of the Actors Circle and Diva Theater collaboration. Attendees included representatives from both Actors Circle and Diva Theater at the Providence Playhouse, including Mark Fryer, Actors Circle, Paige Balitski, Diva Theater, Brink Powell, Diva Theater, and Britt Demming, Actors Circle; Kristin Magnotta, Lackawanna County Economic Development Director; Sandi Opshinsky, Lackawanna County Grants Manager and Diva Theater; Commissioners Chris Chermak and Bill Gaughan; and representatives from the offices of Congressman Rob Bresnahan Jr., State Senator Marty Flynn, and State Representative Bridget M. Kosierowski.

This local partnership is part of a bigger story

Pennsylvania is preparing to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and communities across the Commonwealth are rising to the occasion. From small towns to big cities, people are finding new ways to celebrate our history, connect with one another, and imagine the future we want to build—together.

“We are excited to contribute to Pennsylvania’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence—and to engage our neighbors in meaningful ways that reflect our shared values while pointing toward a hopeful future,” said Paige Balitski, Founder of Diva Theater. “This collaboration exemplifies a shared commitment to community engagement, cultural enrichment, and the power of theater as a medium to connect history with contemporary audiences.”

The production will bring together local actors, volunteers, and community members to create a vibrant, historically grounded, and engaging theatrical experience.

“It’s thrilling to see so many Pennsylvania communities and organizations stepping up with meaningful, engaging, and inspiring plans as we approach the Semiquincentennial,” said Cassandra Coleman, Executive Director of America250PA. “These grants are giving Pennsylvanians the tools to come together, remember where we’ve been, and imagine what comes next. America250PA is incredibly proud to support this work, and grateful to Governor Shapiro and the General Assembly for making it possible.”

This project is part of the second round of America250PA’s Semiquincentennial Grants, which awarded $510,000 to 44 organizations across 35 Pennsylvania counties. These investments help bring our history to life and ensure every community has a chance to participate in this once-in-a-generation milestone.
