Bells Across PA Rings Out in Lackawanna County
Scranton shined bright last week as America250PA unveiled its newest Bells Across PA installation at the Century Club. The event marked another milestone in Pennsylvania’s journey toward the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

A sense of community pride
The bell, titled “A State of Giving, A City of Hope,” was created by local artist Cherie Fruehan and made possible through the generous support of the Scranton Area Community Foundation. Its vibrant design celebrates the resilience, creativity, and spirit of Lackawanna County—serving as both a striking piece of public art and a powerful reminder that every community has a voice in our shared story.

Strong local partnerships
During the program, Commissioner Bill Gaughan and Mayor Paige Cognetti offered reflections on the pride and history of the region, joined by representatives from the offices of Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Marty Flynn. America250PA Commissioner Virginia McGregor and Scranton Area Community Foundation President & CEO Laura Ducceschi were also on hand, underscoring the deep local partnerships that make this initiative possible.
As Leo Malsky, America250PA’s Director of Operations, reminded the audience: “These fiberglass bells may not ring, but they’re far from silent—each one tells a story about community, creativity, and pride.”

Honoring Pennsylvania’s Role in American History
Following the unveiling, guests learned more about the historic significance of the Century Club building and closed the evening with a reception that blended art, history, and community spirit.
With each installation, Bells Across PA moves closer to its goal: placing at least one commemorative bell in each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties before 2026. Together, these works of art will form a statewide legacy honoring Pennsylvania’s role in the American story.
