All aboard the Pioneer Tunnel Santa Train at the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train in Ashland for a magical holiday experience unlike any other! Running from Friday, November 28 through Sunday, December 21, 2025, this 45-minute round trip is the only nighttime Christmas train in the Coal Region.
Your festive journey begins at the Gift Shop, where each guest receives a souvenir ticket before meeting the Conductor—and a mischievous Grinch—for photos at the Staudenmeier Train Station. Then, climb aboard the beautifully lit, open-air train pulled by a historic 1927 steam locomotive for a ride up Mahanoy Mountain filled with Christmas music and cheer.
At the top, you’ll be welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Claus at their cozy, heated Christmas Retreat, where families can take photos, share holiday wishes, and enjoy a free treat for every child. After your visit, the train carries you back down the mountain, where hot cocoa and coffee await in the Gift Shop—perfect for warming up after your adventure.
Guests are encouraged to dress warmly, bring a blanket, and wear sturdy footwear for this enchanting outdoor experience. The Gift Shop opens at 4:00 PM, offering plenty of time to browse unique holiday gifts before or after your ride.
