Friday, January 30, 2026 | 6:30 PM

“Slopes, Shafts and Planes – the Mechanics of Mining” at Trinity Episcopal Church in West Pittston takes place on Friday, January 30, 2026 at 6:30 PM, featuring mining engineer Justin Emershaw of the Hazleton-based Atlantic Carbon Group. Presented as part of January Anthracite Heritage Month, the program is hosted by the West Pittston Historical Society.

The talk explores how and why mine shafts and planes were placed where they were, and how surveyors guided miners in locating tunnels and shafts underground to support accurate mine mapping. Emershaw also explains how engineers identify coal deposits to determine whether a mine operation can be viable.

Techniques from both historic and modern mining operations are covered, offering a clear look at the practical mechanics behind coal mining past and present.

This program is free and open to the public.
