For years the Susquehanna River has brought unique value to its community. From its early days of being the main source of food and travel to currently acting as host to an array of recreational activities.  This river deserves to be celebrated! 

Luckily for us, The Riverfront Parks Committee has got this covered. 

Every year, RFP invites the community to participate in their Riverfest celebration at Nesbitt Park in Kingston. The day is filled with fun, food, entertainment and of course plenty of opportunities to beef up your knowledge about the environment.

When we first arrived we couldn’t help but notice the giant dragon boats in the river filled with participants training for tomorrow’s competition. As entertaining as it was watching the crew try to keep control of their boats, our attention was immediately captured by the starting sound of the 5k color run hosted by the Street Art Society of NEPA. 

We continued to walk around the park and stopped to talk with some of the vendors along the way. We then tagged along on the guided nature hike and learned about some of the important flora and fauna in the region. As the day progressed, we caught glimpses of children scurrying by with excitement as they checked items off their list during the scavenger hunt. We then decided to grab some food and stopped to listen to local artists, Triple Fret, who were entertaining the crowd with some classic rock music.

Shortly after, a round of applause broke out for the kayakers who just wrapped up their 13+ mile trip down the river. As a past participant of the adventure, I knew the smiles on their faces were both for a feeling of accomplishment and for now having the ability to join in with the rest of the celebration.
